Conventions Found In Opening Sequences - Conclusion

After looking at multiple different conventions in opening sequences I now have a good understanding and idea of what the purpose/effect of them are. This is what I've found is most commonly seen and used:

1. Title & Credits:
  • Film title, production companies, actors, crew, director.
  • Purpose: Introduces the film professionally and sets tone through font/style.

2. Establishing the Setting:
  • Establishing shots, extreme long shots, location shots.
  • Purpose: Shows where and when the film is set and orients the audience.

3. Introduction of Characters:
  • Main character often introduced early (through action, dialogue, or visuals).
  • Purpose: Helps audience understand who to follow and their personality.

4. Narrative Hook:
  • Something interesting, shocking, or unusual happens.
  • Purpose: Grabs attention and makes audience want to keep watching.

5. Creation of Enigma (Mystery):
  • Withholding information, unanswered questions.
  • Purpose: Builds curiosity and engagement.

6. Genre Signifiers:
  • Visual/audio clues (e.g. dark lighting = horror, bright colours = rom-com).
  • Purpose: Signals the genre to the audience quickly.

7. Use of Sound & Music:
  • Non-diegetic music, diegetic sound, silence.
  • Purpose: Sets tone, mood, and atmosphere.

8. Mise-en-scène:
  • Costume, props, setting, lighting, colour.
  • Purpose: Gives clues about character, genre, and themes.

9. Camera Work:
  • Close-ups, long shots, tracking shots, angles.
  • Purpose: Directs audience attention and shows importance.

10. Editing:
  • Pace (fast/slow), cuts, transitions, flashbacks.
  • Purpose: Controls tension, creates meaning, can create enigma.

11. Tone & Atmosphere:
  • Created through lighting, sound, pace.
  • Purpose: Establishes emotional feel of the film.

12. Themes & Ideas Introduced:
  • Love, isolation, danger, identity.
  • Purpose: Hints at what the film will explore.

13. Narrative Structure:
  • Linear or non-linear, flashbacks, voice-over.
  • Purpose: Sets how the story will be told.


14. Representation:
  • How people/groups are shown (gender, age, class, etc.)
  • Purpose: Shapes audience understanding of characters and society


15. Audience Positioning:
  • POV shots, voice-over, emotional cues.
  • Purpose: Encourages audience to connect with certain characters.
